Hermès Petit h - scenography

Scenography by Angela Yuen

Captivated by the vibrant and colourful creativity found within the petit h materials store, the artist painstakingly selected dormant treasures of all kinds. Scraps of leather, ties, buttons, padlocks, and more were transformed into imaginative sculptures and mobiles, bringing back to Hong Kong her mesmerising experience at the petit h’s materials store in Paris.

Suspended in the air, materials sourced directly from the petit h workshop cast their silhouettes, projecting onto the wall shadows of the petit h products. Through the play of light and shadows, the artist deconstructs and reconstructs the petit h products, paying homage to its transformative power, celebrates the creativity of petit h, repurposing materials into cherished and playful creations.

Hermès, Landmark

Took a deep dive into the world of Hermès during my visits to their workshops in Paris- in July 2023 and January 2024. It was like stepping into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory!
I have the chance to see the behind-the-scenes, witnessing how the brand's heritage continues to inspire their designs, how petit h designs are brought to life.

Over two trips, I treasure hunted and amassed cartons of Hermès elements at the workshop - everything from silk ties and hardware to leather skeletons and Kelly bag buckles. These tiny, intricate parts were the building blocks I used to create the 14 light and shadow installations that became the scenography for their flagship store in Hong Kong, transporting the Hong Kong audience on my voyage of discovery in Paris.

Seeing how a saddle could transform into a chair back was truly magical !
Founded as a harness workshop in 1837 by Thierry Hermès, the company still incorporates equestrian elements into a wide range of products, from handbags to furniture!

I used my visual diary to capture these fascinating discoveries, which then inspired the scenography I developed to transport the Hong Kong audience on my voyage of discovery.
By deconstructing Hermès' petit h products and reconstructing them with light and shadow, I aimed to let local viewers experience the wonder I felt visiting the workshops. It was a truly special opportunity to go beyond the final products and connect with Hermès' rich heritage and creative process.🐎✨
